Objectives:
General objective :
Implementing an infrastructure in order to collect, store and take over WEEE for 38 200 inhabitants of Ungheni City and 25 350 inhabitants from 10 neighbouring rural localities.
Description:
According to a recent study, 6% of total quantity of waste in Ungheni City and neighbouring localities come from old or broken WEEE, stored in the household or thrown out. The actual toxic potential of WEEE presents a great risk for over 63000 inhabitants of Ungheni City and neighbouring localities, but for all nearby natural resources as well. Although, in the last 5 years Ungheni City accumulated a positive experience in selective collection of ordinary urban waste, but because of lack of the special necessary infrastructure and equipment and because of population unawareness regarding the danger and severity of WEEE negative effects, the experience couldn’t be extended to their selective collection.
Actions Components:
Informing and awaring campaign for the population regarding the necessity and importance of WEEE selective collection;
Arranging a storing and taking over point of WEEE;
Procuring special equipment for collecting and storing WEEE: containers for small sized WEEE (bulbs, storage batteries, used batteries), containers for storing large sized WEEE (computer monitors, TV sets, radios, refrigerators, washing machines), a pickup truck for transporting WEEE to the new arranged storing and taking over point;
Creating a station for informing the population regarding the WEEE selective collection and their transporting facilities to the storing and taking over point.
Activity Summary:
The main goal of the project is to improve the share of WEEE collection and reducing their negative impact on environment.
Project activities will come to prevent the generation of WEEE, as well as their separate collection and further transportation, so as to decrease the quantity of this type of waste. On the other hand, citizens’ sensitization and information campaign will contribute to the success of new system implementation and development of rational collection habits of WEEE and their recycling.
