Objectives:

General objective:

Implementing an infrastructure in order to collect, store and take over WEEE for 38 200 inhabitants of Ungheni City and 25 350 inhabitants from 10 neighbouring rural localities

Description:

According to a recent study, 6% of total quantity of waste in Ungheni City and neighbouring localities come from old or broken WEEE, stored in the household or thrown out. The actual toxic potential of WEEE presents a great risk for over 63000 inhabitants of Ungheni City and neighbouring localities, but for all nearby natural resources as well. Although, in the last 5 years Ungheni City accumulated a positive experience in selective collection of ordinary urban waste, but because of lack of the special necessary infrastructure and equipment and because of population unawareness regarding the danger and severity of WEEE negative effects, the experience couldn’t be extended to their selective collection.

Actions Components:
  1. Informing and awaring campaign for the population regarding the necessity and importance of WEEE selective collection;
  2. Arranging a storing and taking over point of WEEE;
  3. Procuring special equipment for collecting and storing WEEE: containers for small sized WEEE (bulbs, storage batteries, used batteries), containers for storing large sized WEEE (computer monitors, TV sets, radios, refrigerators, washing machines), a pickup truck for transporting WEEE to the new arranged storing and taking over point;
  4. Creating a station for informing the population regarding the WEEE selective collection and their transporting facilities to the storing and taking over point.

Activity Summary:

The main goal of the project is to improve the share of WEEE collection  and reducing their negative impact on environment.

Project activities will come to prevent the generation of WEEE, as well as their separate collection and further transportation, so as to decrease the quantity of this type of waste. On the other hand, citizens’ sensitization and information campaign will contribute to the success of new system implementation  and development of rational collection habits of WEEE and their recycling.

Purpose:

Project’s goal is to reduce the quantity of WEEE generated that will further lead to the improvement of citizens’ living conditions from Ungheni city and its neighbourhood localities, as well as of the region by activities that will be carried out by the applicant, target-groups and beneficiaries.

The population will feel the real benefits of the process immediately in terms of localities sanitation and solving the problem of WEEE storing.  After a while, the advantages will be assessed compared to the reducing level of environment pollution. The collection and storing of waste in adequate conditions will decrease the risks of diseases and pollution arising due to the decomposition of toxic substances into soil and surface waters.

For the Local Public Authorities, the project will improve the process of communication with citizens, bring advantages to all parties involved. In this sense, the information campaign will be not just an operational one as regards the collection of WEEE, but will also contribute to the strengthening of the so-called division according to the intervention. After a period of time, this process will work on cyclic principles, in which the good functioning of the service will stimulate citizens to contribute to its economic development.

The project will enhance the civic partnership and will determine elaboration of common initiatives in order to improve and adapt innovation methods of WEEE management by creating an optimized collection and storing system, population awareness, testing of new methodologies.  Civil society representatives (Local Initiative Groups, schools, colleges), private sector will be involved in the project by means of activities destined to aware the importance of WEEE adequate management.

Establishing appropriate conditions for WEEE collection, transportation, as well as creation of the storing point will contribute to territory’s attractiveness for potential investors.

Results:

• Increased degree of population information and awaring regarding WEEE collection;

• A collecting and taking over point for WEEE arranged in Ungheni City;

• The quality of sanitation service improved;

• Reduced quantity of WEEE with at least 50% during a year in Ungheni City and neighbouring rural localities;

•  Reduced environment pollution.

Description Ungheni is an important city in the Central-Western part of the Republic of Moldova, the residence of the same district. The locality is located on the eastern bank of Prut River, in front of the homonymous village from Romania. The special geographical situation at the crossroads was the key to Ungheni urban status. Thanks to such a settlement, it was decided in the 70's of the nineteenth century the construction of the Chisinau-Iasi railway line, that passes through Ungheni. The city is 105 km away from Chisinau, 85 km from Balti municipality and 45 km from Iasi (on the motorway and 21 km from the railway). With a population of over 38,000 inhabitants (2016), it is the 7th largest city in the country and the largest in the Center Development Region.
